Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment designed to remove dead skin cells, clear away built-up surface debris, and get rid of unwanted vellus hair (peach fuzz) for improved skin texture and a revitalized appearance. By gently exfoliating the outermost layer of skin, the procedure works to bring forth newer, healthier tissue that is softer, smoother, and more radiant than before—creating a rejuvenated look and feel.

At Kurkjian Aesthetics in Fort Worth, board-certified plastic surgeon Jon Kurkjian, MD offers this popular treatment due to its proven efficacy and exceptional results for individuals seeking quick and easy skin improvement. What Is the Dermaplaning Procedure Like?

To perform dermaplaning, an experienced member of Dr. Kurkjian’s clinical staff will carefully guide a specially-angled scalpel in small strokes across the skin to essentially “shave” away the outermost dermal layer. This process completely removes dead skin cells, fine hair, and any debris present, promoting the growth and emergence of softer, unblemished skin underneath.

To address the entire face, dermaplaning generally takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. As a minimally invasive procedure, patients experience little to no discomfort—often describing the sensation as similar to that of shaving. Following treatment, there is typically no downtime, and normal daily activities can usually be resumed immediately.

In order to maintain optimal results, we generally recommend dermaplaning every three to four weeks, as new skin cell turnover occurs approximately every 28 days.

Are There Any Side Effects from Dermaplaning?

Side effects from dermaplaning are minimal, with the most common being slight redness and mild skin sensitivity—both of which are temporary. Some individuals are worried that dermaplaning will make their hair grow back darker and thicker than before, but this concern is unfounded and should not be an issue.
