*There are a variety of factors that can influence the longevity of facelift surgery results, some of which include the patient’s skin quality, the particular technique employed by their plastic surgeon and the lifestyle they lead in the years after their procedure. Generally speaking, healthier, younger skin that has maintained some degree of elasticity is usually more resilient following surgery. This inherent quality of skin can often be a significant predictor of facial rejuvenation success. With respect to the surgical method utilized, facelift procedures that simply tighten lax skin typically don’t create results that last as long as approaches designed to elevate and tighten both the skin and the underlying musculature of the face.
One of the most important factors to determine the longevity of a facelift result is the surgical method. Skin-only facelifts tighten the skin while ignoring the deeper layers of the face. This is an antiquated approach that results in unnatural results, poor scarring and a return to the preoperative aging face after only a short time. Modern facelift techniques involve some sort of manipulation of the deeper layers of the face. Tightening of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) layer is the most critical maneuver in achieving long-lasting and natural results. The best facial rejuvenation techniques focus on tightening the SMAS layer, while removing only the excess skin.
How long will it last? My technique of SMAS layer manipulation combined with fat grafting and skin resurfacing often “turns back the clock” approximately 10 years. The aging process begins as soon as the recovery is completed, however, in 10 years – our goal is that my patients will still look better than if they had never had facial rejuvenation. An important point to remember is that sustaining a healthy skin lifestyle can help extend the longevity of facelift results. This includes eating a balanced diet, consistent use of sun protection, and continued use of medical grade skin care products.
As with most procedures, a more personalized approximation of how long your facelift results may last can be provided by a board certified plastic surgeon. Your consultation should focus on the individual characteristics of your facial anatomy and skin in the context of your facial rejuvenation goals.
